Master’s Thesis in Cancer Research

The group of Florian Grebien at the Institute for Medical Biochemistry of the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna is looking for a highly motivated Master’s student to explore molecular mechanisms of leukemia development.

The project aims at understanding molecular mechanisms underlying the functional cooperation between different driver oncoproteins in Acute Myeloid Leukemia. The student will establish and apply state-of-the-art sequencing methods (such as CUT&RUN) to investigate the binding patterns of transcription factors and epigenetic regulators in relevant cellular models. The functional contribution of identified genomic regions with regulatory potential will be investigated using molecular perturbations, such as CRISPR/Cas9-mediated loss-of-function studies. In addition to providing insights into the fields of cancer biology and leukemogenesis, this thesis offers access to diverse methodologies in cell biology, biochemistry and molecular biology, including CRISPR/Cas9-medited genome engineering, mouse models of leukemia, flow cytometry, assays of cell proliferation and survival, RNA-seq, ChIP-seq and others. The successful applicant will join a dynamic and versatile laboratory experienced in molecular and cellular biology.

The Master’s Candidate Profile:
The ideal candidate holds a bachelor degree in biomedical sciences (biology, medicine, genetics, biochemistry, biotechnology) or in a related field and has a strong interest in cancer biology. Previous experience in cell culture as well as basic molecular biology skills is an asset. As the working language is English, advanced written and oral communication skills are required, as well as high accuracy, reliability and very good interpersonal skills.

Application Details:
If the profile fits you and you would like to be part of a dynamic and ambitious research group, please send a cover letter, a detailed curriculum vitae, reference letters and contact details of two suggested referees to Elizabeth.heyes@vetmeduni.ac.at.

The starting date is flexible; applications will be considered until the position is filled. Financial support will be provided according to the guidelines of the collective agreement.
